Back in the Saddle!
Gunshow rebounded majorly after last weeks crap show with a seriously awesome show of high quality improv.
In a little switch up we did a form called "Repressed Memories." Starting from the suggestion of a word from the audience one member of Gunshow tells stories from his or her life. The rest of the group asks questions to get more details out of the person. It's great fun. Mainly we get to make fun out of one of the people in the group and this is something we love to do.
Scenes:
1) Guy trying on a jockstrap that is too small. He's afraid he's going to "Pop a nut." Cut to: He goes to wretsle and his balls pop. Cut to: He goes to the hospital and the doctor refuses to diagnose him with popped nut.
2) A guy has trouble at home. His mom offers him some advice about dealing with bullies. His stepdad does too and it's rejected. Cut to the bully at school beating up the guy. The bully is concerned about his victims lack of fight. He asks if the victim wants to talk about any problems at home.
3) Dungeons and Dragons scene. Ryan and I did another in the series of our exquisite D&D scenes. They aren't full of jokes but they are sincere because we both used to play D&D as kids so we can talk about it for hours. The audience really enjoys it. The scene. A dungeon master and a player are about to start a game involving the players lesser character. They get into an arguement about something about the character. Time Dash 3 hours, They are still arguing, Time Dash 3 Months there is a birthday party and the player has come back to the DM's house for his birthday. The player has been playing D&D at a gaming store and there are obviously bad feelings about.
4) Father and son talk while son is putting on weight. When the father asks the son to power up the son starts thrusting his crotch and reveals that he has taken off his pants and is only wearing jock. he goes to the weigh in. He is underweight until one testical pops out. Then he wrestles and his ball pops out and he uses it as a weapon against his opponent.
5) Jock Strap store. Mom comes into the store to buy one. She remarks that the salesman about the same size as her son. He offers to sell it to her right off his body. For $20 extra he'll put on a show of taking it off. He offers to power up for her.
6) A Dungeons & Dragons scene. A wizard is speaking to another charcater but the dialogue is forced. "look I'm married and I have a job" Cut the the real world. The players from the earlier scene are back playing D&D together but they have been playing apart for a while and things have changed. The player starts gathers his things and leaves.
7) A man enters a store and is confronted by the Camp Black Dragon Adventuring company. They offer him an exotic adventures. "Perhaps a long walk across spain?"
BLACKOUT: Way to go us!
Afterwards we walked to McManus and drank a few. As usual there were a few comedy heavyweights there. Besides us I mean. Tyhe best part was that I got to split a cab back to brooklyn 3 ways so it only cost be $6! Now that's a treat.

The worst show ever
On Friday Gunshow had what I consider our worst show ever. There were a lot of factors involved in earning the show that titled. The theater was insanely warm. It was probably 85 degrees in the theater. Hot and dry. This is a terrible environment to watch comedy in. It's too hot to laugh. So when a show starts to go south the players start trying too hard to get laughs which aren't coming no matter what because it's so hot. Unfortunately the heat wasn't the only thing to blame. In my opinion the whole show sucked from the improv side as well. Everyone had a majorly uninspired night. Ideas seemed to be really shallow and the repetition of the same shallow gag kept us going in really shitty circles. Seriously, I have had shows where I thought "man, that was weak." but the audience liked it. This was the first time I got off stage and was like "I want to kill myself" and the audience was like "Yeah... that might be for the best."
Here are the scenes:
1) old man drives too slow with injured person in the car. Oh man is he driving slow. How injured is the man? Who knows. But slow driving and other slow stuff is happening. A lot.
2) kid smells like gasoline. Kids at school are dousing him in gas for some reason. He wants to change his clothes and style to avoid future harassment. Father comes home and announces that he will be punishing the children who harass his son by blowing their houses up. He then sets his son on fire.
3) I am holding you in Pussy jail until my brother gets here. This statement is repeated for a while until someone, not the brother, arrives. This new person asks if the brother is coming to beat the guy up. Then he proceeds to douse the pussy jail prisoner in gasoline and set him on fire killing him for no reason. Then the brother arrives and seems to not notice that the man he was to going beat up has been burned alive and is dead.
4) People in this country celebrate the birth of their country oddly. 2 foreign sailors driving a car/boat on the wrong side of the river are assaulted by fireworks. This seems to happen for a long time. Someone is set on fire by a roman candle.
5) You busted my window with this apple. Did you do it with an apple cannon? You did? You didn't? We live on a lake? We live in an apartment building? YOu and your brothers dropped it through on a sring and now they are smashing through the window on ropes, too?
6) More pussy jail. Pussy jail flashback. More people being doused in gasoline and burned.
EDIT: I forgot about the part of the show where we broke the fourth wall in order to make it abudantly clear to the audience that we as a group do not condone the setting on fire of people. It was interesting but there was some weird additions to even this straight forward attempt to apologize to the audience for how badly the show was going.
7) Mom confronts the children who douse her son in gasoline. More pussy jail. Vagina Prison.
At this point I seem to have blocked parts of the show from my memory. No one member of the group was to blame for the fiasco. It was a total group suck fest.
What was really disapoiting wqas there was actually a decent sized crowd for the show. Two people who had come to our sketch show and from that decided to check out the improv show came. They were totally excited about it, too. After the show they were like "We'll keep you on the radar." OUCH! I can't blame them though. The show was that bad. Even if it hadn't been so hot our show was just not that good.
Our friend Kate who is in town from Milwaukee for weekened wanted to buy a new dog shirt for her Schnauzer so we went down to the new neighborhoodies opened on Atlantic Ave just off court. It was a nice place. Not as many fonts available as some of the other stores or online but we managed to make us some nice items. Ace's new "Mellow Man Ace" shirt is pretty cool.
We went to the Tranist Museum this afternoon. It's pretty damn cool there. So what are you waiting for? Get going!

I am ashamed
I am such a bad blogger. I just haven't been finding enough things in my day-to-day interesting. That and once again I have been burned by someone reading my blog and letting me know they didn't like my portrayal of them. I wish people would just blog negatively about me rather than complain to me but then I guess I wouldn't know how they feel because I don't read other blogs for the most part.
Work plods along. I am in a good rhythm. Most stuff is working. There is still a mountain of weird bits and pieces laying around. Maybe once a month we figure out what something is and get excited as we can finally throw it out. The department has so many old misc parts everywhere it's mindboggling.
Our home owner woes continue. Our phone stopped taking calls. Our upstairs neighbors can't stop flooding Ace's bathroom. The kitchen sink has a broken washer and it can't be moved or water will shoot out. The Super fixed that but he said we can't move the faucet anymore. Of course right after he left one of us moved the faucet. I won't say who.
We have a show this weekend. I am excited. We also have a friend coming in from Milwaukee on Saturday. I am excited some more.
My college basketball team is in the NCAA for the 2nd time ever and they are actually ranked 11th. Thats pretty insane. I was watching them when they were NCAA II, then they moved to NCAA I and should have been invited to the NIT but got dissed. Now that I am out of the city they finally make it. I have been out of the city for 9 years so I suppose that they aren't doing it to spite me.
in the same old news column: I have had a major relapse of stomach ailments. The medicine which has served me well in the last 3-4 years seem to have lost their efficacy. I have had a string of harrowing and painful train rides to school. I can't wait for it to start hitting the 50's regularly so I can get back on the bike. When I ride i have no stomache problems at all. Plus I think it's like atleast 10 miles to and from work so it'll be nice to get those miles under the belt. I do need a new bike. So does Jodi. We're going to ride a lot of weekends this fall if I have anything to say about it. And as we know, I get my say.

Time Marches On
life is plodding away and carrying me along with it.
Went with Finn and Kate to see They Might Be Giants perform at the Allen Room in the new Time Warner glass and steel monstrocity on Columbus Circle. It was a joint performance with some great New York writers all for a benefit for a Park Slope drop in after school program. The titles of the show was "They Might Be Giants versus McSweeny's" There was no actual fighting but we had a good time anyway. Finn & Kate buoght the tickets for us as a Xmas present which was awesome. We haven't been spending nearly enough time with our friends. The lack of Finn time has probably been the greatest. We just have opposite schedules these days it seems. So it was nice to have an adult night out.
First off I have to say that the Allen Room has an awesome view. Behind the performers was an amazing view all the way down Columbus and Central Park South. The theater says Jazz all over it in big bold letters so I am assuming that I won't be seeing shows there again anytime soon.
Afterwards we marched through the cutting wind to Rosa Mexicana for some $10 margaritas and some fresh guacamole. Seriously... $10. That is retarded. I mean, they were good, but for $10... I don't know... I want something for free. I mean it was pulled out of a machine. The bartender does zero. That must be 99% profit. I'm surprised they don't giggle when they sell them.
I was just reading Al-Jazeera's website and I was struck with how often I see the President or America itself burned in effigy. At first i was like "Why do they have to always be burning us in effigy? Doesn't that get old?" But then I realized that we burn them for real with bombs and fire and stuff so if it makes them feel a little better by burning a sign or flag that's okay with me.
Then I was just reading in Time magazine about how some guy wrote a book on to save 8 million people a year from starving to death. That's exactly what we need. 8 Million more people a year on this planet. I don't even want to get started. I just want to burn starving people in effigy.

Did I mention that it was to the max?
Last night Gunshow pulled out all the stops and like a comedy hurriance tore down all the barriers to laughter with gales force HA-HA's.
I was almost late for the show thanks to the MTA and it's shitty service change announcements. I left at 7pm, which should have been more than enough time to get to SoHo. Instead I made it to the theater at 7:55. 5 minutes before the show was supposed to start. Then it took us forever to everything in place and then when we did let people in there was 15 minute long line for the bathroom. So the show started 30 minutes late.
In the end all the delays didn't really matter. The audience loved the show. All my anxiety was gone by the 3rd sketch. We actually did a lot better than the first show and that show went really well! Once again the Piata sketch was a big hit. Everything was a hit.
Afterwards I had a rare treat of hanging with Finn & Alex at a much less crowded bar than the one we have been hanging out at. I didn't catch the name but $4 bottles of Becks caught my favor.
Today greeted me with a real bummer. I checked my gmail and discovered that I fucked up on two ebay sales I recently made. I got the orders switched. It's really got me down. I made an offer to have them send the item back and I will send the correct items to the correct people express. I figure I will lose %20-%30 of the final sale but it'll be worth it for my peace of mind. I figure that either way I am about to get my first negative feedback. Or neutral feedback at best.
Sigh.
BTW I am loving TiVo. I am catching up on all my Meet the Press!
